Why the Keyword Meta Tag is Still Valuable for SEO

The best use of the keywords meta tag is as an organizational tool for each page of the website so one can easily see and keep track of which terms that page is intended to target.

In the early days of search engine optimization, the primary method of getting the search engines to rank your website for the right keywords was to add a keyword meta tag to each page of your site.

However, a number of years ago, Google stopped using the keyword meta tag field as the basis for any part of its algorithm, rendering this method obsolete.

But, that doesn’t mean that keywords are dead, or that the keyword meta tag is worthless.  In fact, Pilot Fish finds the keyword meta tag to be immensely useful in implementing and managing SEO projects.  Here’s why:

Organizing Keywords for SEO

Oftentimes, when we speak with a new client, we ask them which keywords they feel are important to their business.  This provides us some valuable insight into their company and industry and gives us a starting point for additional keyword research.

At the same time, we evaluate the new client’s current search engine performance against their desired keywords and review how well the site currently is optimized.

What we inevitably find is that even for sites that already have implemented SEO, the keyword list they provide us doesn’t match up with what we see on the site. Keyword terms might be included in the keywords meta tag, but oftentimes aren’t used in the areas that really are important to SEO, like the Page Title, URL, H1, image Alt tags or text.

When it comes to effective SEO, the best use of the keywords meta tag is as an organizational tool for each page of the website so one can easily see and keep track of which terms that page is intended to target.

Since most companies can expect to have 20 or more good keywords they want to target, not using the keywords meta tag as a reference tool forces the development or use of an off-site tracking system just to ensure that the site has been appropriately optimized for all the targeted terms.

Even though Google doesn’t use the keywords meta tag field any longer, it’s still included in SEO plug-ins like Yoast for WordPress, as well as SEO diagnostic tools, like SEO Quake, providing a handy way to organize the keywords on your site to ensure maximum coverage of all your SEO terms.
