What is Search Engine Optimization?

Like other forms of promotion, search engine optimization, also called SEO marketing or organic SEO, is a way of getting your company to stand out from the crowd. No one knows the exact number, but there are billions of pages on the Web. That's a lot of competition when trying to get eyeballs to your web site.

As much as 95% of Internet users use search engines. So getting your site to perform on one of the top three U.S. search engines -- Google, Yahoo and Bing -- is pretty important.

Your site may already be indexed in a search engine, but unless it's appearing on the first two pages of search engine results for keywords known to be important to Internet users, it's likely your site is not performing as well as it could be.   Websites showing up on Page 1 of results on Google get 92% of the click-thru.  Sites showing up on Page 2 get 5%.   The rest of the sites, on Page 3 and back, share just 3% of the click-thrus.  So, if your site isn't showing up on the first or second page of search engine results, you're missing out on significant traffic.

Although you may be tempted to do SEO yourself, the best way to improve your site's position is to have your site search engine optimized by an experienced SEO firm. So, what is search engine optimization or organic SEO? It's the process of working with the content on your site, the site's coding and incoming links in a manner that conveys to the major search engines that your site is relevant to the keywords you're targeting.

Many SEO firms are qualified to work with your website content (perform search engine optimization) to improve your site's search engine ranking on keywords that site visitors would use to locate you.

But, we recommend that you only work with SEO firms that have experience with companies like yours.  Why does that matter?  There are specific SEO and social media strategies that SEO firms will use with consumer-oriented sites that likely are not relevant to an industrial business.  Also, pricing can vary greatly among SEO firms that work with consumer sites vs. B2B sites.   By selecting an SEO firm that has demonstrated experience in your general business space, you minimize the learning curve, which will ultimately reduce your cost and get your site on the right track faster.
