Effective Website Design: Use Motion to Create Visual Expression

Less is definitely more when it comes to any type of animation or movement

Attracting visitors to your website can sometimes be a challenge. Keeping them there can be even more of a challenge. Luckily, these days, there are a lot of effective website design techniques available that can help to not only attract visitors, but to keep visitors interested and engaged in your message and what you have to offer.

One effective website design technique that can help interest and retain visitors is the use of motion. Below are some techniques that can be used to create motion, bring energy to your site, make it more enticing for visitors to engage in and make it more memorable.

Sliders
An image slider is a fantastic, eye-catching way of getting a lot of visual information into a limited amount space. Instead of only having one image and tagline to showcase your products or services, your website design can feature a creative, interactive, frame by frame animation to help tell your story and direct site visitors to various important sections of your site.

Video
Videos gauge interest through movement, expression and sound. When you have those three elements, it’s not surprising that most people prefer a video to a static image. Compelling videos will bring energy to your content and visitors will be likely to share that message with others, which can help improve site traffic and your SEO.

Drop-Downs and Rollovers
Drop-downs and rollovers have been widely-used for years. And, why not? They are an effective website design technique to organize buttons and a perfect way to add a functional use of motion to your site. If you want to add more appeal to your drop-downs and rollovers, create additional, subtle effects to your buttons, such as a splash of color, a shadow or outline, or, fading.

Cinemagraph

Cinemagraphs are animated GIFs in which a subtle and repeated movement occurs, forming a short looping video clip. It’s a simple and attractive way to bring attention to an image through movement. It can even be as subtle as a timed color change, which can be effective in attracting a wider audience as different colors are attractive to different people.

No Movement at All
Adding motion can be attained with no animation at all. The motion is implied by the elements of your website design through shadows, shading, texture, composition and even photo selection. Illusions of movement can be made by using shapes such as arrows, rules, dotted lines or bullet points. Color can guide your eye from one area of the page to another. Certain fonts, font sizes and weights can also create the effect of motion throughout the design.

When implementing motion on your site, note that there is a fine line between engaging your visitors and annoying them. Less is definitely more when it comes to any type of animation or movement.  Use motion to prioritize your content. The key to successfully adding motion to your website design is to keep the effects very subtle and by not using too many techniques on one page. Stimulation overload is very distracting and is not the goal. A nice, pleasant complement to your graphics and content is what you are looking for in obtaining a perfect balance and more attention to the message you are trying to portray.
